The Recreational Use of Land and Water Areas Act was drastically changed by the hunting/shooting and trial lawyer interests last year. Now, there is no incentive for the private landowners of nearly 95% (according to the IDNR) of the open space available in Illinois to offer it up for recreational access for activities other than ones involving firearms. Read how the law changed here http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/publicacts/fulltext.asp?Name=094-0625 and the background on this issue at this site http://illinois.sierraclub.org/legislation/FixSB251.html and this one http://www.farmdoc.uiuc.edu/legal/articles/ALTBs/ALTB_05-02/ALTB_05-02.pdf For mountain bicyclists, this will be a huge problem. With the Act in its current form, both MTB trails in Springfield are threatened. Lewis Memorial Acres is completely on private land and a very important section of the Lick Creek Trail is too. The Lewis board of directors will soon consider its liability situation and is scared they may have to make drastic changes. I am sure there are other riding or recreation areas we use around the State that are in jeopardy too. I believe the mountain biking community will need to get political this year and work with other recreational interests to amend the current law to fix this situation. Anybody up for this fight? How did the IMBA visit go down south? How's things going up north at DG? Any more info on Camfield and the Decatur area?? (oh..wait...that's my area...and Camfield looks like a go, but Garman may be a loss) I know...I know...it's winter and there's not much going on. But I just wanted to stir the waters. Message-ID: <000601c61f74$736d2d00$0201a8c0@terryk8wdoljjb> I missed the meeting at the Shawnee a couple months back...so forgive me if this has already been discussed. BUT...what about having an IMBC meeting at the Midwest Mountain Bike Festival in April?? We could have a breakfast meeting then go ride or have a ride and then a beer meeting in the afternoon?? I know it's in that "other state"...but the festival is exactly suited to things such as our organization throughout the midwest. I just wanted to plant the seed. If there was already a date and place set for spring...just ignore me. Most people do.... TC -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I had a blast last year, and unlike the Shawnee IMBA visit, we should have plenty of time to do some drinkin', uh . . . um . . . I mean have some meetings. Sean
